Pages and Subpages
Pages hold your content. Subpages sit under a page so you can break a large topic into smaller pieces. You can nest subpages as deep as you need, and rearrange everything with drag and drop.
Add a page
- Open the collection.
- Next to the Pages heading in the sidebar, click + (Add Page).
- A new page called "Untitled" opens. Type a title and start writing.
In an API collection, + asks whether you want to add a page or an endpoint.
Add a subpage
- Hover over a page in the sidebar.
- Click the + (Add page) that appears next to it.
- A new "Untitled" subpage opens under that page. Give it a title and add content.
Subpages can have their own subpages. Click the arrow next to a page to expand or collapse its children.
Blog collections don't use subpages: every post is a top-level page. See Blogs.
Page actions
Hover over a page in the sidebar and click ... to open its menu:
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Rename | Change the page name, its Page Slug (the URL part) and its Short Name. |
| Archive | Remove the page and its subpages from the collection. You can restore them later. |
| Copy IDs | Copy the page's IDs (as JSON) for use with the API, the CLI or support requests. |
The Short Name is an optional shorter label for the sidebar. Turn on Fill with AI to let DocStar suggest one. Short names show only when the Short Name component is turned on in the collection's theme settings.
For slugs and URLs, see Page URLs and Slugs. For archiving, see Archive, Trash and Restore.
Reorder and move pages with drag and drop
Drag a page by its name in the sidebar and drop it onto another page. The page you drag is placed just above the page you drop it on, at the same level.
This means you can:
- Reorder pages or subpages within the same parent.
- Move a subpage up to the top level by dropping it on a top-level page. It becomes a top-level page.
- Move a page under another page by dropping it on one of that page's subpages. It becomes a subpage.
When you move a page, its subpages move with it.
Drag and drop has a few limits:
- You can't drop a page inside its own subpages.
- You can't move a page next to a sibling that already uses the same slug. Rename one of them first.
- You can only move pages within the collection you are viewing.
Moving a page changes its URL. DocStar automatically redirects the old URL to the new one, so existing links keep working.
Filter and search pages
- Click the filter icon next to Pages to show All Pages, only Published or only Unpublished pages.
- Press Ctrl + K (Windows/Linux) or Cmd + K (macOS) to search the collection.
Tips
- Keep top-level pages for main topics and use subpages for the steps or details inside them.
- On a published site, a page with subpages can show them as cards. See Navigation Cards.
- New pages stay in draft until you publish them. See Publish Pages.
