Quick Start
This guide takes you from a new account to a published page in a few minutes. You will create a workspace, add a collection, write a page and publish it.
1. Sign in and set up your workspace
- Sign in to DocStar.
- If you don't have a workspace yet, you'll see Welcome to DocStar. Enter a Workspace Name (3 to 50 characters: letters, numbers, spaces and underscores).
- Click Continue.
DocStar creates your workspace with a starter collection called "Your Collection" and a first page, so you can start writing right away.
2. Create a collection
A collection is one set of docs, such as a help center, an API reference or a blog.
- Click the collection name at the top of the left sidebar to open the collection menu.
- Click Add collection.
- In Create New Collection, fill in:
- Collection Name: what your team will see.
- Collection Slug: a short ID made of lowercase letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores. It is used by AI agents (MCP) and the CLI and can never be changed. Your company or product name is a good choice.
- Select Type: Doc, API, Blogs or Embed. See Choose Your Docs Type.
- Click Create Collection.
Already have docs somewhere else? Use Import collection in the same menu. See Import Content.
3. Add pages
- Click the + (Add Page) button in the sidebar. In an API collection, choose Page or Endpoint.
- Give the page a name and start writing.
- To nest content, add subpages under any page.
You can drag pages in the sidebar to reorder them. Learn more in Pages and Subpages.
4. Write your content
The editor supports headings, lists, tables, images, code blocks and more. Type / to open the list of blocks. Your teammates can edit the same page at the same time. See Editor Basics.
5. Publish the page
New pages are drafts and only your team can see them.
- Open the page and click the settings (gear) icon in the page header. The Publish & Preview panel opens.
- Click Publish.
After you publish, the panel shows the page's public URL. If you edit the page later, publish again to update the live version.
6. Publish the collection
To put your docs online, the collection itself must be public.
- Click Settings in the left sidebar.
- Open the Publish Collection tab.
- Click Publish Collection, then View live site to see it.
Only published pages appear on the live site. In the same tab you can protect the site with a password or an IP allowlist. See Publish Pages and Access Control.
7. Make it yours
In the collection Settings, use Theme & Customization, Header And Footer and Domain to add your logo, colors, navigation and your own domain. See Branding & Domain.
8. Bring in your team
Open the workspace menu at the bottom of the sidebar and click Members to invite teammates and choose what each person can access. See Members and Roles.
