Publish Pages
You can publish one page as soon as it is ready, or publish many pages at once from the collection settings. To publish or unpublish, you need edit access to the collection. Read-only members see the controls but cannot use them.
Publish the collection first
Pages are public only when their collection is published too.
- Open the collection and click Settings in the left sidebar.
- Open the Publish Collection tab.
- Click Publish Collection.
The banner changes to Collection is Public & Live and shows the live URL. Use the copy icon to copy it, or View live site to open it. If you connected a custom domain, the live URL uses that domain.
To take the whole site offline, click Unpublish Collection on the same banner.
Publish a single page
- Open the page.
- Click Publish at the top right of the page.
Once the page is live, the button changes to Preview, which opens the public page in a new tab. A green dot next to the page title means it is live.
For more options, click the gear icon at the top right. The Publish & Preview panel lets you:
- Publish or unpublish the page.
- Change the page URL with Rename URL. DocStar redirects the old URL for you.
- Copy the live link. Switch between Public (the page inside your docs site) and Single (a standalone link to just this page).
- Turn on Allow editing via link. See Edit via Link.
- Set the page's SEO details. See SEO, Sitemap and llms.txt.
The parent must be published first
A subpage cannot go live before its parent. If the parent page is unpublished, publishing the subpage fails with "Parent page is not published". Publish the parent, then the subpage. Publishing a page does not publish its subpages; use bulk publish for that.
Bulk publish
Use bulk publish to release many pages, or a whole section, in one step.
- Go to Settings > Publish Collection.
- Scroll to Bulk Page Publishing.
- Tick the pages you want. Ticking a page also ticks everything under it.
- Click Publish Selected. The button shows how many items you picked.
Each page has a colored dot: red for Unpublished, amber for Updated (live, but changed since), green for Published. Look for amber dots to find pages with edits waiting to go live.
Edits return pages to draft
When you edit a published page, it goes back to draft and its dot turns amber. The live site keeps showing the last published version. Publish the page again, or bulk publish it, to push your changes live.
Unpublish a page
- Open the page and click the gear icon.
- In Publish & Preview, click Unpublish.
- Review the list of links that will stop working, then confirm.
Unpublishing a page also unpublishes all of its subpages. To keep visitors from hitting dead links, add a redirect to another page.
Tips
- Publish the collection once, then publish pages as they are ready.
- When you publish, DocStar can fill in missing SEO meta data with AI and translate the page into your enabled languages.
