Redirects
Redirects send visitors from an old URL to a page's current URL. They keep shared links, bookmarks and search results working after you rename, move or remove pages, and they help you keep your search rankings.
DocStar uses permanent (301) redirects, so search engines move the old URL's ranking to the new one.
Automatic redirects
DocStar adds a redirect for you in these cases:
| You do this | DocStar does this |
|---|---|
| Change a page URL with Rename URL in the Publish & Preview panel | Redirects the old URL to the new one. Subpage URLs that change are redirected too. |
| Move a page to a new place in the sidebar | Redirects the page's old path to its new path. |
| Delete a page | May ask "Do you want to add redirection?" Click Yes to pick a page to send visitors to. |
Add a redirect by hand
Use this when an old link points to a URL that no longer exists, for example after a migration from another tool.
- Open the collection and click Settings in the left sidebar.
- Open the Redirections tab.
- In the Enter slug field, type the old path that visitors are using, for example
old-slug. - Click the destination page in the page list on the left. Its path fills the Redirection URL field.
- Click Add.
You see "Redirection added successfully!" and the redirect appears in the table below.

Tip: use the search box at the top of the tab to find pages, slugs and existing redirects.
Manage redirects
Every redirect in the collection is listed in a table:
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Slug | The old URL that visitors arrive at. |
| Redirection URL | The page they are sent to. |
| Actions | A delete icon to remove the redirect. |
Delete a redirect when you no longer need it, or when you want to reuse the old URL for a new page. After you delete it, the old URL stops forwarding.
Good to know
- A redirect always points to a page in the same collection.
- Redirects work on the DocStar URL and on your custom domain.
- When you publish a page at a URL that has a redirect, DocStar removes that redirect so the new page is served.
- Before you unpublish or delete a popular page, add a redirect so readers don't hit a "not found" page. See Publish Pages.
