SEO, Sitemap and llms.txt

DocStar helps search engines and AI assistants find and understand your published docs. You set meta details per page, AI can fill them in for you, and DocStar generates a sitemap, an llms.txt file and Markdown copies of every page.

Get indexed: use a custom domain

Search engines index your docs when they are served from your own domain. Pages on the default DocStar link are marked noindex, so they won't show up in search results. To get search traffic, connect a custom domain using either CNAME or a Cloudflare Worker.

Set a page's meta title, description and tags

  1. Open the page and click the gear icon at the top right.
  2. In the Publish & Preview panel, expand SEO Configuration.
  3. Fill in:
    • Meta Title: the title shown in search results and the browser tab. If you leave it empty, DocStar uses the page name.
    • Meta Description: a one or two sentence summary shown under the title in search results.
    • Tags: keywords that describe the page.
  4. Click Save.

Prefer to start from a suggestion? Click Generate with AI to write all three fields from the page content, then edit them and save.

AI meta data on publish

When you publish a page that has no meta description or tags, DocStar generates a title, description and tags with AI in the background. They are used on the live page, and you see them as the starting values in SEO Configuration.

To write the meta details yourself, fill in the description and tags before you first publish the page.

#

AI SEO Score

In the same panel, AI SEO Score rates the page and lists suggestions.

  1. Click Generate SEO Score.
  2. Read the score and the AI Suggestions.
  3. Click Chat with AI to Apply Suggestions to have the AI assistant help you make the changes.

The page needs at least 1,000 characters of content. Below that, the panel shows how many more characters you need.

#

Sitemap

DocStar builds sitemap.xml for you. It lists every published page in the collection and updates as you publish or unpublish, so there's nothing to maintain.

Where your docs live Sitemap URL
Custom domain https://your-domain.com/sitemap.xml
DocStar link /p/sitemap.xml?collectionId=<your collection ID> on the DocStar app domain

On a custom domain, robots.txt is also served for you and points crawlers to the sitemap. Submit the sitemap URL in Google Search Console to speed up indexing.

#

llms.txt for AI assistants

llms.txt is a plain-text index that helps AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude understand your docs. DocStar generates it from your published pages.

  • On a custom domain: https://your-domain.com/llms.txt
  • On the DocStar link: /p/llms.txt?collectionId=<your collection ID>

For a regular docs collection, it lists each published page with its link and a short summary. For an API collection, it also tells AI agents how to discover your modules and endpoints.

#

Markdown version of every page

Add .md to the end of any published page URL to get the page as raw Markdown. For example, https://docs.example.com/getting-started becomes https://docs.example.com/getting-started.md. AI crawlers and assistants read this format more reliably than HTML, and the links in llms.txt point to these Markdown versions.

Tips

  • Write a unique meta title and description for your most important pages.
  • Keep URLs short and readable with Rename URL. DocStar adds a redirect from the old URL.
  • Blog collections also get an RSS feed at /feed.xml on your custom domain.
