Editor Basics

The DocStar editor works with blocks. Each paragraph, heading, list, image or table is a block that you can insert from a menu, format and drag to a new position. Your work saves automatically, and teammates can edit the same page with you at the same time.

#

Title, icon and cover

  • Title: click the title at the top of the page and type. The title is the page's main heading.
  • Icon: hover above the title, click Add icon and pick an emoji. It appears next to the page in the sidebar.
  • Cover image: hover above the title and click Add cover image. Upload a file, paste an image URL, search Unsplash, or generate one with AI. The recommended size is 1600 × 840 pixels.

Insert blocks with the slash menu

Type / at the start of an empty line to open the block menu. Keep typing to filter it, then press Enter or click an item.

Group Blocks
Headings Heading 1 to Heading 5, Toggle Heading 1 and 2
Basic blocks Paragraph, Bullet List, Numbered List, Check List, Toggle List, Quote, Code Block, Divider, Alert, Link to Page, Embed HTML
Advanced Table
Media Image, Video, Audio, File
Others Emoji

Some useful blocks:

  • Alert highlights important information. Choose Info, Success, Warning or Error.
  • Code Block shows code with syntax highlighting. Pick a language such as JavaScript, Python, JSON, Bash / Shell or SQL.
  • Link to Page inserts a card that links to another page in the same collection. See Navigation Cards.
  • Embed HTML adds an HTML or script embed code, for example a form or a video player.

The page title is always the top-level heading, so Heading 1 is the largest heading inside the page body.

Format text

Select text to open the formatting toolbar. From there you can:

  • make text bold, italic, underlined or struck through,
  • add a link,
  • change text color or background color,
  • align text left, center or right,
  • turn the block into another type, such as a heading or list,
  • indent or outdent list items.
Shortcut Windows / Linux macOS
Bold Ctrl + B Cmd + B
Italic Ctrl + I Cmd + I
Underline Ctrl + U Cmd + U
Strikethrough Ctrl + Shift + S Cmd + Shift + S

You can also format as you type with Markdown. See Markdown.

#

Move and manage blocks

Hover over a block to see the handle on its left. Drag the handle to move the block. Click it for more options, such as deleting the block or changing its color. Click + next to the handle to add a new block below.

#

Tables

Insert a table with /table. Click inside the table to show its handles, then use them to add or remove rows and columns and to drag them into a new order.

#

Images, videos and files

  • Paste or drag and drop an image straight into the page to upload it.
  • Or insert an Image, Video, Audio or File block from the slash menu, then upload a file or embed one from a URL.
  • Drag the edges of an image or video to resize it, and add a caption below it.
#

Edit together in real time

Several teammates can edit the same page at once. Changes appear instantly for everyone, and you can see where others are typing. There is no Save button: DocStar saves as you go and keeps a version when an editing session ends. See Version History.

Edits stay in draft until you publish the page. See Publish Pages.

Copy page for AI tools

Published pages show readers a Copy page button that copies the page as Markdown for AI assistants. Its menu also offers Open in ChatGPT, Open in Claude and Open in Perplexity. API documentation also shows Copy prompt for AI. The button doesn't appear on blog posts.
