Navigation Cards
Navigation cards help readers move between related pages. DocStar gives you two kinds: subpage cards, which appear on a parent page automatically, and Link to Page cards, which you place anywhere in your content.
Subpage cards
When a published page has subpages, DocStar can show them as cards at the bottom of that page. Readers get a quick overview of the topic and can click any card to open the subpage. If the parent page has no content of its own, the cards make it a ready-made overview page.
Each card is built from the subpage itself:
| Card part | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Title | The subpage's name |
| Cover image | The subpage's cover image (set with Add cover image on the subpage) |
| Preview | The first lines of the subpage's content |
| Last updated | The date the subpage was last updated |
Which parts appear depends on the card template you choose: an image card, a standard card with a preview and date, or a simple title card. See Gallery View.
Turn subpage cards on or off for one page
- Open the parent page and click the settings (gear) icon in the top-right corner.
- Under Page Settings, switch Gallery View ("Show subpages as cards on this page") on or off.
The page setting overrides the collection default. To change the default for every page, go to Settings › Theme & Customization and use the Gallery View switch under Visible Components.
Link to Page cards
Use a Link to Page card to point readers to a related page from anywhere in your content, for example a "Next steps" section.
- In the editor, type
/link to page(or/card) and press Enter. - Click Link to a page… on the new card.
- Type in Search pages… and select the page.
The card shows the linked page's title, and its cover image if it has one. Clicking the card opens that page, both in the editor and on your published site.
You can link to pages in the same collection. If the linked page is archived later, the card no longer opens it, so update or remove the card.
Why use cards
- Easier navigation: readers see what's inside a topic at a glance.
- Better structure: parent pages become clear entry points into a set of subpages.
- A more visual site: cover images make help centers and knowledge bases easier to scan.
Tips
- Give each subpage a cover image when you use image cards, so the grid looks consistent.
- Keep the first paragraph of each subpage short and descriptive. It becomes the card preview.
- For plain text links inside a sentence, select the text and add a link from the formatting toolbar instead. See Editor Basics.
